The Many Colours of Trini Carnival
Another Carnival has passed. Fetes (Parties), sleepless nights, going from one event to the next have concluded and as it is every year, thousands of tourists arrived to enjoy the celebration and culture of my twin island republic.
Although many countries now celebrate their own brand and extension of Carnival, in Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival is like no other. The experience is simply unforgettable, awe inspiring and a sight needed to be seen.
Our Carnival is a coming together of people of different races and walks of life but it is the final of the festival is almost the most hectic and fun filled. there are the finals of all competitions (Pan, King and Queen of the Bands, Calypsonian and Soca Star of the year). It is during the last two weeks leading up to Carnival Monday and Tuesday that everyday and night boost fetes, competitions and traditional events.
As the anticipation of the two days of celebrated wild abandon draws near, the people of Trinidad and Tobago resign to collectively loose themselves, forget about the grind of their lives, crime and whatever grievance they have and just come out to enjoy themselves.
The main winners of this year's round of competitions were; Machel Montano (Soca Monarch), Kerwin Du Bois (Groovy Soca Monarch), Roderick “Chucky” Gordon (National Calypso Monarch), Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra (Mas Band of the Year [Seniors]), Petrotrin Phase II (Panorama), Kris B. Persad aka KI (Chutney Soca), Wade Madray & Peola Marchan (King & Queens of Carnival) and Machel Montano (Road March). Full list of results.
As the dust settles and Ash Wednesday arrives, the tourist begin to leave our shores and the locals unwind on the many beaches and rivers around the islands. As our visitors leave they take with them a sense on contentment and awe in bearing witness to 'the greatest show in the world'. Locals go back to the grind and wait for next year's celebrations to begin again.
